The Bar Torino was a hotel complex on Passeig de Gràcia No. 18 in Barcelona .

Opened in 1902, the bar was known for its modernist decoration under the direction of Ricard de Capmany and in collaboration with the architects Antoni Gaudí , Pere Falqués and Josep Puig i Cadafalch .

history

The bar was founded by Flaminio Mezzalama, a native of Turin (Italian: Torino ), hence the name. His intention was to introduce the Vermouth Martini & Rossi in Barcelona. The bar opened on September 21, 1902. At that time it was the most luxurious bar in Barcelona, especially because of its modernist style decoration.

Antoni Gaudí, Pere Falqués and Josep Puig i Cadafalch designed the dining room. The sculptural group of the door posts was by the sculptor Eusebi Arnau , which depicts a woman with a glass in her hand. The painter Ricard Urgell also made two panels with hunting scenes. Some of the frescoes were by Emili Saumell Llavallol and Francesc Garcia Escarré. The stained glass work was done in bronze and metal by Antoni Bordalba. The mosaics came from Musiva Società Veneziana, combined with Fratelli lamps. Michael Thonet designed the furniture. Gaudí designed the Arab hall with the decorations. The bar was the venue for the city of Barcelona’s annual art competition.

The original bar was bought in 1916 by the Bofarull family, owners of the famous Los Caracoles restaurant (opened in 1835), and renamed the Grill Room . The characteristic bull from 1902 is preserved to this day in the central shield of the bar.
