The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (unofficially short Bara ) in the South African Soweto ( Diepkloof ), a district of Johannesburg , is considered the largest hospital in Africa and the southern hemisphere and the third largest in the world. It is subordinate to the provincial government of Gauteng and is partially integrated into the Faculty of Medicine of the Witwatersrand University .

history

The hospital was built in 1941, called The Imperial Military Hospital, Baragwanath, for British and South African soldiers participating in World War II. The official opening took place on September 23, 1942 in the presence of Field Marshal Jan Smuts . In 1948 it was renamed Baragwanath Hospital , after John Albert Baragwanath, who owned an inn nearby.

In 1997 the name was changed to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. The name suffix " Chris Hani " is intended to commemorate the very popular high-ranking ANC member who was murdered in 1993 after the CODESA negotiations were concluded . His violent death on April 10, 1993 almost sparked civil war. In 2011 the Gauteng Provincial Government announced that the institution would be called Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital from April 10th . This act was justified with the central role of the institution in the medical education in the country.

The hospital has an area of ​​0.7 km², around 3200 beds and 6760 employees. The facilities are housed in 429 buildings with a total floor area of ​​233,795 square meters. It is also one of the teaching hospitals at the Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg. Here, 60 percent of their medical students go through the offered training programs.

Around 70 percent of all deliveries are recorded in the emergency department, including around 160 victims of gunshot wounds every month. The accident, emergency and ambulance areas are the most frequently used services with over 350 patients per day. Every year around 150,000 inpatient and around 500,000 outpatient care are initiated here.

The eye department, St John Eye Hospital , has 111 beds and about 50,000 patients annually. Every year around 60,000 patients are treated in the Maternity Hospital .
