Barakat Chahin

Barakat Chahin (also: Barakat Shahin ; * 1946 in Salamiyya , Hama Governorate ) is a Syrian businessman and politician; In 2002 he was appointed Deputy Minister for Industry.

life and career

Barakat Chahin was the fifth of 10 children in his family. His father was known to be an excellent rider and horse breeder. In 1933 he won the Syrian national horse racing championship. In 1958 the family moved to Damascus where they started a small trading business.

Chahin graduated from high school in 1965. As one of the best students of his year, he was able to enroll in the medical faculty at the University of Damascus. However, financial reasons forced him to drop out after receiving a state scholarship for elite chemical engineering students in Poland. In 1973 he completed his studies at the Universities of Szczecin and Lodz as a Dipl.-Ing. from. In 1974 internships followed at Bayer AG in Germany, Sandoz AG in Switzerland and Arlic in France.

In 1973 he began his professional career at the Research and Development Center of the Ministry of Industry in Damascus. Then he worked in the public sector. He worked in shoe manufacturing, in plastic and rubber production and in 1980 he became general director of the "General Tanning Company". His main tasks here were the fight against corruption and the reorganization of the administration. After a year he was able to lead the company into profitability.

In 1988 he became General Director of the Private Sector and All Crafts. This position was the most important position within the Ministry of Industry. He played an essential role in promoting technical and structural innovations, assisted the expansion of research and development, and was in charge of the allocation of investments in the private sector. He managed to re-establish the industrial infrastructure (the industrial cities in Syria) and was instrumental in establishing the Association of Syrian Industry and the Union of Syrian Crafts.

He is interested in the sustainable development of the environment. He took part in all environmental projects and conferences, including the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (The Earth Conference), which took place in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 .

In 2002 he was appointed Executive Minister for Industry (Deputy Minister). In this position he shaped the very good relations between Syria and the European Union. Above all, he initiated various joint ventures between Western European and Syrian companies. His initiatives were generally aimed at transferring Western European technology to Syria and encouraging European entrepreneurs to invest in Syria.

Due to his resolute stance against the widespread corruption in the country, he was ultimately the victim of a plot of his own government confidante. When he realized that corruption could not be combated under these circumstances, he decided to resign in 2003 and had to leave Syria.

In 2007 he received an award from the Syrian-European Business Center on behalf of the European Commission for his role in strengthening the Syrian-European partnership.
