The Barbagallo Raceway is a racetrack in Pinjar , Australia , approximately 50 kilometers north of Perth .

history

The route was originally called Wanneroo Park (also called Wanneroo Raceway ).

The first race took place in March 1969. From 1969 to 1972 the Six Hour Le Mans was the main event on the course. The race previously took place at Caversham Airfield Circuit from 1955 to 1968 . In 1973 the first race of the Australian Touring Car Championship was held. From 1977 Wanneroo Park was an integral part of the racing calendar. The series , which has meanwhile been redesigned to become V8 Supercars, still drives the Perth SuperSprint on the track today . The Perth Super Sprint is one of the largest sporting events in Western Australia . More than 50,000 spectators attend the three-day event every year.

In 1979 the Australian Grand Prix took place on the track, and the new paddock and pit facilities were opened at the same time . In addition, the position of the start / finish line was changed. The race was won by the Australian Johnnie Walker in a Lola T332 Formula 5000 . This was the last victory of a Formula 5000 car at the Australian GP.

In the 1980s, mainly touring car races took place. The route remained unchanged except for small changes.

In 1992 it was decided to build a short version of the route. Curve 5 was connected to the back straight, creating a new route with a length of 1.7 kilometers. The modifications were mainly financed by Alf Barbagallo , which is why the name of the track was changed to Barbagallo Raceway Wanneroo. The short route variant made it possible for other racing events to take place, such as truck racing . In addition, you could now drive at night.

In 2002 the pit lane was widened significantly, but there were still no permanent pit buildings. In 2004 the entire course was completely repaved, which meant that almost all lap records were broken within a few months. The route used to be known for its high tire wear. The new road offered more grip and less wear on the tires.

The V8 Supercars series withdrew from the Barbagallo Raceway in 2010. A permanent pit system was built on this, as well as some modernizations to the infrastructure of the track, so that the V8 Supercars returned to the track in 2011 after a year break.

The first “Australian Festival of Speed” in 2010 also took place on the track. Formula 1 driver Mark Webber drove a few demonstration laps in a Red Bull Racing Formula 1 car .

There are also some motorcycle races and training events on the course.

Peter Brock and Craig Lowndes hold the record with five ATCC and V8 Supercars wins on the track. The most successful team is the Holden Racing Team with a total of six wins.
