Barbara Egger-Jenzer
Barbara Egger-Jenzer (born September 22, 1956 in Steffisburg , Canton of Bern ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ). From 2002 to 2018 she was head of the building, transport and energy department (BVE) as a member of the government of the canton of Bern.
Study and job
Barbara Egger-Jenzer initially trained as a primary school teacher in Muristalden and also worked in this profession from 1976–1979. Then Egger-Jenzer took the Matura and studied at the University of Bern Law ; She completed this course in 1987 with the state examination as advocate (lawyer). During her studies she continued to work part-time as a teacher.
After completing her studies, Barbara Egger-Jenzer ran her own law firm (law firm) in Bern until she was elected to the Bern government council in 2002. After resigning as a government councilor in 2018, she was elected to the Stadler Rail Board of Directors in 2019 .
Political career
She started her political career in 1991 when she became the Bernese ombudswoman for age and home issues; she held this part-time position until she was elected to the government council in 2002. She has been a member of the Social Democratic Party since 1982. In 1994 she made the leap to the Grand Council (cantonal parliament), where she also stayed until 2002. Egger-Jenzer crowned her career in the Grand Council in 2001/02 as President of the Grand Council (Chairwoman of the Parliament).
On April 14, 2002, Barbara Egger-Jenzer was elected to the Bernese government council and thus to the executive . With the construction, traffic and energy directorate, she took over the “infrastructure directorate” of the canton.
In its first term of office from 2002–2006, the Bernese cantonal government was mostly bourgeois; Since April 2006, the second largest Swiss canton in terms of population has been ruled by a red-green majority.
Barbara Egger-Jenzer was re-elected in 2006 in first place of all 19 candidates for the 7 seats (in the canton of Bern, as in most cantons, the government is elected according to the majority vote). During the election campaign she came under fire from the bourgeoisie for alleged credit overruns in tunnel construction; the sovereign was not impressed by it.
In 2018 she did not stand for re-election.
Private
Barbara Egger-Jenzer is married and has two children.
