history

A plaque describing the history of the chapel

The Barbara Chapel was built around 1330 by monks from the Herrenalb monastery. In the middle of the 15th century, the chapel was a place of pilgrimage because there was an image of St. Barbara there, which was supposed to work miracles. With the Reformation in 1556, pilgrimages slowly lost their importance, only to come to an end quickly between 1590 and 1610. The chapel fell into disrepair until it was rebuilt in the 17th century.

In the Palatinate War of Succession , the roof was damaged and the roof structure rotten. Even before the renovation work was completed, there was further significant damage during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1707 and it was repaired in 1724. The building was abandoned around 1730 and then served as a quarry and material depot. In 1796, during the First Coalition War, Napoleon's troops removed the last lead sheets from the tower roof and cast bullets from them . In 1797 the tower of the chapel was renewed and in 1903 the whole building. The tower has been accessible again since 1966 and has served as an observation tower ever since . In 2009 the chapel was renovated.

In a fenced-in area around the chapel, regional markets took place several times a year from the pilgrimage until 1816.

At the ruins, services are occasionally held in the open air.
