Barbarian

Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior was developed in 1987 by the British game developer Palace Software for the C64 , C16 , Sinclair ZX Spectrum , Atari ST , Amstrad CPC and Acorn BBC home computers. In 1988 publications for the Amiga and IBM-PC followed . Marketing in the USA was taken over by Epyx .

The game, based on stories like Conan the Barbarian , can be played alone or in pairs. The focus is on sword fighting. In the single player mode, the player competes against various opponents with the aim of defeating the magician "Drax" later and freeing "Princess Marina". The multiplayer mode consists of battles against each other.

At that time, the game was often criticized for its brutality. So it was possible to cut off his opponent's head. In Germany, the game was indexed on October 31, 1987. In September 2012, the indexing was lifted after the 25-year period.

Barbarian II

Barbarian II: Dungeons of Drax (also marketed as Ax of Rage ) was released in 1988 for the C64. In 1989 ports were made to Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Sinclair ZX Spectrum and IBM-PC. In the second part, the player can choose between the barbarian known from the first part, who is now armed with a battle ax, and “Princess Marina”. The aim of the game is again to defeat the wizard "Drax". The game is divided into three extensive levels that are quite branched. This includes a volcanic area, a cave system and finally the Dungeon of Drax . A compass in the form of a sword shows the player the right way. To solve the game, the player has to find three artifacts in order to finally be able to defeat the final boss.

Barbarian III

A third part was planned, but never published due to the bankruptcy of the companies involved.
