features

The southern Alpine saber hippopotamus is very similar to the hardwood saber hedge and is 15 to 20 mm long like it, so that both species are difficult to distinguish from one another. The basic color varies considerably from gray and light brown to olive green to light green and turquoise. The abdomen is short and thick, the pronotum and head are small. The antennae are roughly the length of the body. The legs are of medium length and have small spines on the lower legs. The strongly receded wings are light brown. A yellow band runs from the eye over the thorax and down to the abdomen, which often continues on the latter. The head, like the legs, can have a slightly reddish tint. The abdomen has tiny dark spots that can be closer or farther apart, making the body sometimes appear dark green. The male's cerci are clearly S-shaped and dark red in color. They are the most important distinguishing feature between the hardwood saber-insect and this species. The latter has blunt cercus ends, and a tooth at the end of the same.

Way of life and distribution

The southern alpine saber-insect lives in slightly shady forests and bushland. It is often found on blackberry leaves . The species replaces the hardwood saber-insect in the southern Alps . It occurs from the Basses-Alpes to the Julian Alps and in small populations in the Apuan Alps .
