The Barbuda Council is the representative body on the island of Barbuda .
tasks
The Barbuda Council carries out the day-to-day management of Barbuda. It was created in 1976 by the Barbuda Local Government Act . It is responsible for the areas of agriculture, forestry, health and construction. To this end, it is divided into five committees: Finance , Labor and General Affairs , Health, Social Affairs and Disaster Relief, as well as Tourism, Sport, Culture and Youth Affairs and Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Coastal Protection . In order to be able to carry out its tasks, the council has the right to collect taxes and duties.
Members
Composition and elections
The council has 11 members. Nine of these are elected in public and secret ballot for an electoral period of four years, with elections taking place every two years in March and four or five new seats being filled on a rotating basis. The representative of Barbuda in the House of Representatives and the senator sent by the council belong ex officio to the council. Eligible as members are persons who have their permanent residence in Barbuda and have reached the age of 18, who are citizens of a state of the Commonwealth of Nations and who were born on Barbuda or are the children of a parent who was born on Barbuda or who have been resident for at least three years Barbuda and whose native language is English. Persons who are foreign nationals, have filed for bankruptcy or suffer from a mental disorder are excluded from the election. Persons who have been sentenced to death or to a prison term of over one year are also not eligible. The same applies to people who work full-time for the Council or who have any other private interest in its work. United Kingdom Armed Forces, Police, Ecclesiastical Office Holders are not eligible candidates . There are four polling stations in which the voters can vote alphabetically according to their last name. The last elections took place on March 24, 2015. Eight candidates applied for the four seats to be awarded; the turnout was 82%.
