Arthur Nibbs

Arthur Manoah Shabazz Nibbs (* 1959 in Barbuda ) is an Antigua and Barbuda politician of the Antigua Labor Party . He has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2014 .

Life

Nibbs received his education at the Holy Trinity School and the Antigua Grammar School . He began his political career in 1977 when he ran unsuccessfully for election to the Barbuda Council . Two years later he was successful. Since 2004 he has chaired the committee. During his time as a member of the Council, he campaigned for the independence of his home country from Great Britain and was actively involved in negotiations on this. In the general election of 1989 he stood as a candidate for the Barbuda Independence Movement , but lost the election significantly against the candidate for the Barbuda People's Movement . In the 2004 general election , Nibbs was a candidate for the Barbuda People's Movement for Change . With 400 votes, he won as many as the Barbuda People's Movement, so that the election had to be repeated in April 2004. In this by-election , Trevor Walker , candidate of the Barbuda People's Movement, won the seat by 14 votes. After Nibbs moved to the Antigua Labor Party and was again defeated by Walker in the 2009 elections , he was finally only one vote ahead in the 2014 general election to win. Since June 18, 2014, he has been in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Gaston Browne, responsible for the Agriculture, Land, Fisheries and Barbuda resort. In addition to his political commitment, Nibbs worked as an air traffic controller at VC Bird International Airport . He was also the manager of The K Club golf club in Ireland .
