Gaston Alphonso Browne (born February 9, 1967 in Potters Village , Antigua and Barbuda ) is a politician of the Antigua Labor Party (ABLP) and has been Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda since June 13, 2014.

Family and education

Browne was born in Potters Village, a township east of Saint John's and, according to his own statements, grew up in poor circumstances, first with his great-grandmother in Gray's farm and then with one of his parents. He received his education at the Villa Primary School and the Princess Margaret School . From there he moved to Antigua State College . He then attended City Banking College and the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom . After returning to his home country, he worked in banking and management. Browne is a second married to Maria Bird, a niece of former Prime Minister Lester Bird . With her he has a son. He also has three other children from his first marriage.

Political career

Browne's political career began in 1999 when his party made him a candidate for the constituency of St. John's City West in the 1999 general election. He was elected to the House of Representatives with 48.64% of the vote and has represented the interests of this constituency there ever since. Already in his first legislative term he took over the office of Minister for Housing under Lester Bird . On June 26, 2003, he took over the newly created Ministry of Commerce and Housing. With the takeover of government by the United Progressive Party after the general election in 2004 , Browne left government, but was able to defend his seat in the House of Representatives. After his ABLP won the election in 2014, he was elected Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda to succeed Winston Baldwin Spencer . When he took office, he was the country's youngest Prime Minister to date. He also holds the office of finance minister.
