Barcolana
Barcolana is the largest sailing regatta in the world. Since 1969 it has been held annually on the second Sunday in October in the Gulf of Trieste , in front of the northern Italian port city of Trieste . Over 2,000 sailing yachts were there in 2014. The regatta has been organized by the sailing club "Societa Velica di Barcola e Grignano" since 1969. The name of the regatta is derived from the Barcola district of Trieste .
Since 2003 the average number has been over 1,800 ships. It is estimated that well over 20,000 sailors attend the Barcolana each year and over 250,000 spectators attend the event. In the first Barcolana in 1969, only 51 ships took part. During the Barcolana, Trieste turns into the world capital of sailing and countless events, concerts and events also accompany the races in the "Villaggio Barcolana". The event begins on the first Sunday in October with the "Barcolina" for optimist dinghies and then continues for the rest of the week. At the city entrances of Trieste there are official signs with the words "Trieste, citta della Barcolana", which also testifies to the identity-creating effect of the event for the city and region.
