Bardi (Aborigines)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bardi are an Aboriginal tribe who live north of Broome in part of the Dampier Peninsula in the Kimberley region.

In addition to the Bardi, there are the Djarindjin , Lombadina tribes , which are the three Aboriginal tribes that live in this area.

The songwriter and musician Jimmy Chi is from the Bardis and numerous Aborigines who reside in the Broome area these days.

The Kooljaman Resort on Cape Leveque is run by the Bardi tribesmen. Most of the Bardi live in the small settlement One Arm Point on the peninsula, where sea snails are caught commercially on an offshore reef.

On the Dampier Peninsula there is a Lombadina Aboriginal Corporation , which is run by Lombadina Aborigines and offers accommodation.

About 25 speakers are fluent in the Bardi language, but more than a thousand people identify as Bardi.
