Barenburg (oil field)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Barenburg oil field is located near the village of Barenburg in Lower Saxony. The field, which was found in 1953 through reflection seismic exploration, is still in production today. It was developed by the BEB and is now being exploited by the German Esso on behalf of the BEB.

The oil field

The oil field is divided into two reservoirs: On the one hand, the main reservoir in Obervalangin and, on the other hand, a secondary reservoir in Obermalm.
The main deposit in a sandstone layer with a thickness of up to 45 m is located above a 200 to 300 m high claystone sequence that separates the two deposits. The upper deposit is at a depth of 630 to 740 m.
The secondary deposit consists for the most part of various limestones. The oil is extracted from almost 60 production wells. Water is injected through secondary boreholes in order to maintain positive pressure in the reservoir.
In 1979 the total oil content of the field was given as 16.7 million tons. Both deposits are completely independent of each other. The upper deposit already had a small gas cap before it was developed; in 1979 this deposit supplied around 97% of the total amount of oil from the Barenburg field.

The oil extracted is processed on site and sent by tank car to the Emsland oil refinery , where it is processed.
