Barend Joannes ter Haar

Barend Joannes ter Haar (born June 23, 1958 in Groningen ) is a Dutch sinologist .

Life

Barend Joannes ter Haar studied Sinology at Leiden University from September 1976 to August 1984 (studies abroad: Mainland China (University of Liaoning in Shenyang, August 1979 - July 1980), Japan (University of Foreign Languages ​​in Osaka, April - August 1982, Kyūshū University , August 1982 - April 1984)). After completing his dissertation on January 10, 1990 (Leiden University, dissertation advisors Susan Naquin and Erik Zürcher ), he taught at the chair of Chinese history as C3 professor for social and economic history of China at the University of Heidelberg (October 1994 - September 2000) from Leiden University (Sinological Institute) (August 2000 - January 2013), Run Run Shaw Professor of Sinology at the University of Oxford (January 2013 - October 2018). Since October 2018 he has been professor for Chinese language and literature at the University of Hamburg .

His research interests are the social history of religion, oral traditions, textuality and literacy, and violence in Chinese culture.
