Erik Zürcher
Erik Zürcher (born September 13, 1928 in Utrecht , † February 7, 2008 in Warmond ) was a Dutch sinologist .
He was professor emeritus for East Asian history at the University of Leiden , from 1974 to 1990 he was director of the Institute for Sinology.
He wrote important studies on the early adoption of extra-cultural complex thought models in premodern China, in particular on Buddhism, Ming Christianity and the Chinese reception of the Jesuit mission in the 17th century.
He was one of the editors of the Handbook of Oriental Studies .
His son Erik-Jan Zürcher (* 1953) is professor of Turkish language and culture at the University of Leiden.
