Barholm Castle

Barholm Castle is a tower house near the Scottish town of Carsluith in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. A former classification as a Scheduled Monument was lifted in 2008.

description

The Tower House is located near the shore of Wigtown Bay about three kilometers southeast of Carsluith. The lands were owned by the McCulloch clan . The nucleus of the Tower House originated in the 15th century and was extensively revised in the course of the following century. After the building was described as partially ruined in the 20th century, a restoration was undertaken in the 2000s. Barholm Castle has been inhabited ever since.

The four-story Barholm Castle has an L-shaped floor plan. It was probably originally an elongated structure that was later expanded. The masonry provides information about the building history. While the foundation is made of field stone , quarry stone from the reddish sandstone was used on the upper floors . The entrance portal from the early 17th century closes with a round arch . A suspicious cornice is decorated with grotesque masks and depictions of animals, as is typical of the region. Excavations have unearthed steps that could have been a former porch. The windows are arranged irregularly. On the first floor there is an implied twin window, but without a central post.

The ground floor room is worked with stone vaults . A staircase leads to the upper floors. From the second floor it is continued in a cantilevered bay window in the building's interior corner. On the first floor there is a large fireplace on the south wall with a massive lintel supported on brackets . On the second floor there are two rooms with chimneys. A farm was formerly attached to the north side and another building to the west side. Both have meanwhile been canceled.
