Barmer pond

The Barmer Teich is a stagnant body of water on the federal highway 7 below the Weißenstein in the Hagen district of Holthausen ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It is a karst spring and the water comes from a natural siphon.

geography

The Barmer Teich is one of the few karstified spring ponds in Europe and the only source of the Vaucluse in Westphalia. This karst spring is fed by streams that come from the south and meet the karst, where they flow underground ( stream shrinkage ). Its source pond is now cut into several parts by the main road and the railway line and is partially dammed up. In this spring the water of the Milchenbach and the Holthauser Bach, which seeped away above Holthausen, comes to light again. This could be proven by marking experiments in which the stream water was enriched with dye, which then reappeared in the Barmer pond and some smaller springs in the area.

This remarkable pond with its species-rich aquatic and bank plant communities as spawning waters for amphibians is located directly at the foot of the mass limestone cone "Weißenstein", which rises approx. 70 meters, with the archaeologically significant leaf cave . B. common toad, pond newt, alpine vortex worm and spring snail. The Barmer pond is part of the “Mastberg and Weißenstein” nature reserve .

The pond is located in the catchment area of the swamp of the nearby Donnerkuhle quarry . In order to maintain the water level of the pond, a well was set up nearby, through which fresh water is fed into the Barmer pond.
