Barnard 86 is a dark cloud , or a Bok globule , a spatially limited part of a molecular cloud in which star formation can take place. The dark cloud lies in the constellation Sagittarius and is about 1950 light years away from the solar system. Next to the dark cloud is the star cluster NGC 6520 .
The catalog name of the dark cloud goes back to the fact that the astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard them in the year 1919 published in its 1927 and 350 objects comprehensive catalog of dark nebulae recorded.
