The Barnim-Gymnasium Bernau ( spelling barnim-gymnasium Bernau ) is located north of Bernau near Berlin in the district of Waldfrieden . The school is one of two general high schools in Bernau, in which around 60 teachers teach the around 850 students. As a member of the MINT EC association, the school focuses on training with a focus on mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology (MINT).

The regular transition from elementary school to grammar school takes place at the beginning of the 7th grade. The MINT profile (M class) can be chosen as the focus. history

On September 7th, 1998 the Barnim-Gymnasium Bernau was founded with the first acting headmaster Uwe Kosanke, who ran the school for two years.

In the school year 2000/2001 Renate Brandenburg took over the school management and with her came new, practice-oriented innovations. The most important innovation was the introduction of the performance profile classes, which make the Barnim-Gymnasium Bernau unique in the Barnim district. In addition, she introduced the annual project days and other activities, such as the scientific internship in grade 9, the sports festival, the in-school Einstein competition, and early learning in mathematics and chemistry.

According to the school profile, the pupils receive a deeper understanding of the natural sciences and take part in various Olympiads and excursions in the natural sciences.

The MINT classes include, in particular, the MINT and performance MINT classes (M and LM classes). In these profile classes, the school focus is consolidated and expanded in additional weekly hours. In addition, these classes take part in the Mathematics Olympiad and attend chemistry classes from the seventh grade onwards.

Another special feature of the school is the compulsory IT lessons from grade 5.

After completing the twelfth grade, there is the option of issuing a MINT certificate. This is issued in different stages, depending on the services provided and the number of competitions completed. MINT certificates can have positive effects when looking for a job later. In addition, outstanding high school graduates in individual subjects receive a one-year membership in the relevant scientific association.

At Barnim-Gymnasium Bernau you can choose English, Latin or French as your second or third foreign language in addition to your first foreign language. In addition, a subject is chosen for the so-called “focus teaching” (SPU) from grade 9 onwards that provides additional knowledge on a subject. Furthermore, the students in the 10th grade have to choose between art and music or computer science and technology.

In the 10th grade, in preparation for your Abitur, you select one of the given combinations, which then specifies the courses to be attended in the upper secondary level at the basic and advanced level. Every student automatically has German, English and mathematics at a higher level, and two further courses must be chosen from biology, physics, chemistry and geography. In addition, for the upper secondary level, the students choose so-called seminar courses, which are attended two hours a week and prepare for university life. The subjects of these courses vary every year, courses that are used several times are event management as well as professional and study orientation.

The optional company internship in year 11 and the field trip in year 12 are also relevant for future working life. Approx. 65 teachers and trainee teachers teach approx. 750 students at the school.

Many different degrees can be obtained at the Barnim Gymnasium in Bernau. After successfully completing the ninth grade, you receive the secondary school certificate. Furthermore, after completing the 10th grade, the advanced vocational training qualification (EBR), the secondary school qualification / technical high school qualification (FOR) or the technical high school qualification with entitlement to attend the upper school level is possible. The general higher education entrance qualification, i.e. the Abitur, is achieved after successfully completing the upper secondary level. This makes it possible to visit colleges and universities.

Funding and working groups

In order to promote individual performance, the grammar school offers additional support in various subjects. Schoolchildren in grades 4–6 can take advantage of early learning in mathematics and chemistry.

Remedial classes are also offered for lower secondary level, such as B. in English and mathematics. These additional lessons are mainly led by teachers, but also partly by students.

The Barnim-Gymnasium Bernau offers additional extracurricular afternoon activities, the participation of which is confirmed in the certificate. These include the “Bernau Digital” working group, which deals very intensively with the Bauhaus monument on campus, the origami course, the choir and the Lego Mindstorm course, in which students learn the basics of robotics using the Lego robot.

Competitions

The Barnim-Gymnasium Bernau takes part in international, regional and internal school competitions. The international competitions include the Big Challenge and the kangaroo competition, and the national and regional competitions include the beaver competition or the Bernauer 24h run.

In addition, there are also internal school competitions such as the Einstein competition or the charity run, in which the students organize donors themselves and internal school projects are financed with their income. Furthermore, the Barnim-Gymnasium Bernau offers the reading competition and other scientific competitions.

Rides

In addition to excursions and school trips, the Barnim-Gymnasium Bernau offers the annual Swedish exchange, the snow camp and the trip to London.

The Snow Camp is an 8-day excursion to the Hochoetz ski region. Here the teachers offer ski and snowboard courses.

The student exchange with St. Petri Skola in the city of Malmö is intended to promote independence, a sense of responsibility and multicultural awareness among the students.

Support association

The Friends' Association was founded in 2001 and serves to implement projects and support the school in events and presentations in public life. It is financed through membership fees and donations. This supports school highlights, such as the summer party, but also participation in internal, regional, national and international competitions. In addition, the development association administers the proceeds from the donation run and parks school money for the WAT lessons and the homework book. Furthermore, he works together with the parents' representatives and the school so that the money is used ideally and in the interests of the students. In the last few years the number of members could be increased to approx. 300 members thanks to very good board work. This includes corporate clients, parents, teachers, students and alumni.

Charity run

The charity run at the barnim-gymnasium was launched in 2011 by secondary school students and the basic idea was that the students look for donors from their families, friends or companies in the area who either pay a fixed amount for Donate a minimum number of started rounds or set a sum per round. The charity run has been very successful since then, the amounts raised have increased every year and totaled € 22,008 in 2019. The sponsoring association of the barnim-gymnasium bernau eV is the legal owner and administrator of the money for the donation run and issues donation receipts upon request of the donors. The sponsoring association allows the students to have a say in how the money is used. However, 30% of the money raised must be donated to charitable purposes.
