history

The Coyotes were founded in 1994 by Robert B. Dixon and began playing in the AFL for the 1995 season.

1995–1996 season (AFL)

In the first season you had to pay a lot of money with just one win and 11 losses. The only win dated July 1, 1995 against the Miami Hooters, when they won 60:39.

After this season, the Hartford daily newspaper, the Hartford Courant, reported in detail about the Coyotes' financial difficulties. It was calculated with an average attendance of 8,000 in order to write a black zero at the end of the season. Due to the many defeats, the actual average attendance should be 7,853. In addition, there were expenses such as a percentage of the parking fee that the state received, as well as the payment of a $ 1.25 million loan that the state granted the association. Dixon hadn't wanted to reveal exactly how high the loss actually was. The fact is that Dixon wanted to find a new owner for the Coyotes and charged $ 750,000 for the franchise.

On October 27, 1995, the Hartford Courant announced that a group of investors led by Benjamin Morris and Scott Gerard would eventually buy the franchise.

It also said that Morris, a real estate agent, was confident of leading the Coyotes to financial gain, even though he had never owned a sports franchise before. After all, he doesn't do anything else in his job than buying and renovating ailing real estate and getting the financial benefit from it.

The 1996 season went exactly as the first had ended. In the end, the Coyotes only had two wins out of 14 games. The playoffs were also missed in the second season. The number of spectators remained at almost the same level as last year with 7,847 spectators per home game.

After the Coyotes only won three games in two years, Morris announced on November 1, 1996 that there would be no indoor football in Hartford for the foreseeable future.
