The men's U-21 handball world championship was held in Algeria from July 18 to July 30, 2017 . The organizer was the International Handball Federation (IHF). World champion was Spain, which won the final against Denmark 39:38 after extra time.

Participating teams

Algeria was automatically qualified to host the tournament . France qualified as the winner of the U-19 World Handball Championship in 2015 , as did Spain as the winner of the U-20 European Men's Handball Championship in 2016 and Germany as runner-up. It was Burkina Faso's first participation in a world championship.

Evaluation criteria

The preliminary round games were point games. The team got 2 points for each win and 1 point for a tie. There were no points for a defeat.

If two or more teams are tied, the following criteria will decide on the placement after the preliminary round:

1. higher number of points in direct encounters between teams with equal points;
2. better goal difference in direct encounters between teams with the same points;
3. higher number of goals in direct encounters between teams with equal points;
4. better goal difference from all group games;
5. higher number of goals from all group matches;
6. the lot.

President's Cup

At the President's Cup, places 17 to 24 were played out. The group fifth from the preliminary round played for places 17 to 20 and the group sixth from the preliminary round for places 21 to 24. Just like the finals, the games were played in knockout mode. In the event of a tie after regular playing time, there was an extension of five minutes twice. If the first extra time also ended in a draw, a second extra time was played with five minutes twice. If there was still no team in the lead, the game had to be decided in a 7-meter throw.
