Lukas Mertens (born March 22, 1996 in Wilhelmshaven ) is a German handball player . He plays on the left winger position for SC Magdeburg in the handball Bundesliga .

Lukas Mertens grew up in Wilhelmshaven and graduated from the New Gymnasium Wilhelmshaven. He is currently studying sports science at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg .

Career

Lukas Mertens played in youth for JSG Wilhelmshaven and crowned his career as a youth player with the Oberliga championship of the Handball Association of Lower Saxony in the 2013/14 season. Mertens also played in the Lower Saxony team and has been part of the youth division of the German national handball team since 2012. With the U-20 selection he won the silver medal at the U-20 European Championships in Denmark and was elected to the All Star team. From 2013 he ran for the Wilhelmshavener HV and in 2015 managed the "perfect season" with the team and was promoted to the 2nd handball Bundesliga . Mertens moved to SC Magdeburg in the handball Bundesliga in the summer of 2017 .
