Baron Bolton , of Bolton Castle in the County of York , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain .

The family seat of the barons was Hackwood Park in Winslade near Basingstoke in Hampshire until 1850 and has since been Bolton Hall (also called Wensley Hall ) in Wensley near Leyburn in North Yorkshire .

Award and history of the title

The title was bestowed on October 20, 1797, the former MP and Governor of the Isle of Wight Thomas Orde-Powlett . Born as Thomas Orde, he was married to Jean Mary Browne-Powlett, the illegitimate daughter of Charles Powlett, 5th Duke of Bolton († 1765). After their uncle, the 6th Duke of Bolton , died in 1794 without male heirs and his Duketitel had expired, he had important lands of the Dukes of Bolton from his wife's rights, including Bolton Castle and Bolton Hall in Yorkshire as well as Hackwood Park and Basing House in Hampshire, inherited and in 1795 added his family name to Orde-Powlett with royal permission. From 1800 he was Lord Lieutenant for Hampshire.

Today's title holder is his great-great-great-great-great-grandson Harry Orde-Powlett as the 8th Baron.
