Earl Cairns is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The Earls family seat is Bolehyde Manor in Alington near Chippenham in Wiltshire .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on September 27, 1878 for the lawyer and conservative politician Hugh Cairns . He had been Lord Chancellor since 1874 , an office he had already held in 1868. He was to remain in office until 1880.

Simultaneously with the earldom would give him the downstream title Viscount Garmoyle , of Garmoyle in the County of Antrim , awarded. As early as February 27, 1867, the title Baron Cairns , of Garmoyle in the County of Antrim, was given to him from then on. Both dignities also belong to the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

The heir ( Heir Apparent ) is the eldest son of the current Earl, Hugh Sebastian Frederick Cairns, Viscount Garmoyle (* 1965).
