Simon Cairns, 6th Earl Cairns

Simon Dallas Cairns, 6th Earl Cairns (born May 27, 1939 ) is a British peer and politician.

Life

He is the son of Rear Admiral David Cairns, 5th Earl Cairns . As his Heir Apperent he carried the courtesy title Viscount Garmoyle from 1946 to 1989 . His mother is Barbara Jeanne Harrisson Burgess.

He was at Eton College in Windsor and at the Trinity College of Cambridge University trained. Between 1979 and 2000 he was managing director and board member of various investment banks.

When his father died in 1989, he inherited his title of nobility, including the associated seat in the House of Lords . His hereditary seat in parliament was revoked when the House of Lords Act 1999 came into force .

From 1990 to 2000 he held the office of treasurer (receiver general) of the Duchy of Cornwall .

In 1992 he was accepted as Commander in the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and in 2000 as Commander in the Royal Victorian Order (CVO).

Marriage and offspring

On February 4, 1964, he married Amanda Mary Heathcoat-Amory. He has three children with her:

  • David Patrick Cairns (* 1967)
  • Alastair Benedict Cairns (* 1969)
