The title was created on December 30, 1324 for Roger Gray , a younger son of John Gray, 2nd Baron Gray of Wilton , when he was appointed to the Royal Parliament by Writ of Summons .
As Barony by writ , the title can also be inherited in a female line. The 4th Baron was elevated to Earl of Kent in 1465 . The title of earl fell to another line of the family after the 11th Baron (and 8th Earl) died in 1639. The 15th Baron was raised to Viscount Longueville on April 21, 1690 , his son and heir to the Earl of Sussex on September 26, 1717 . Both titles expired on the death of the 18th Baron (and 3rd Earl) on April 22nd, 1799. The later 21st Baron had inherited the title of Marquess of Hastings from his father in 1851 . The marquessate was extinguished on his death in 1868, the barony of Gray de Ruthyn fell in Abeyance. The title was restored in 1885 in favor of Bertha Clifton, the 22nd Baroness, and fell back to Abeyance when the 24th Baron died in 1934. In 1940 the title was restored in favor of John Butler-Rowdon, the 25th Baron, but fell again in Abeyance on his death in 1963. This situation continues to this day, currently the following heirs share the claim to the title: Simon Abney-Hastings, 15th Earl of Loudoun (* 1974), Norman Angus MacLaren (* 1948) and Rhodri Philipps, 4th Viscount St. Davids (* 1966).
