The title was created on December 6, 1816 for Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 2nd Earl of Moira . Together with the Marquessate he was awarded the subordinate titles Earl of Rawdon and Viscount Loudoun . All three titles belonged to the Peerage of the United Kingdom. In 1783 he had already been raised to Baron Rawdon of Rawdon, in the County of York in the Peerage of Great Britain . His father, who died in 1793, left him with the title Baron Rawdon of Moira in the County of Down and Earl of Moira , which was given to him on April 9, 1750 and January 30, 1762 in the Peerage of Ireland . From his mother in 1808 he inherited the titles Baron Hastings (created 1461), Baron Botreaux (created 1368), Baron Hungerford (created 1426) and Baron de Moleyns (created 1449) in the Peerage of England by Writ of Summons . The 4th Marquess also inherited the title Baron Gray de Ruthyn, created in 1324 by Writ of Summons in the Peerage of England from his mother in 1858 .

When the 4th Marquess died on November 10, 1868, the Marquessate and the subordinate titles became extinct, with the exception of the English Baronies by writ who fell in Abeyance .
