Baron Hastings
Baron Hastings is a hereditary British title of nobility awarded three times in the Peerage of England .
The title of the first award from 1295 still exists today, the second award from 1299 expired in 1314 and the third award from 1461 has been abeyant since 1960 . In the absence of male heirs, all three titles are or were inheritable as Barony by writ in a female line.
Awards
First award (1295)
The title was first created for John Hastings on June 23, 1295 when he was appointed to the royal parliament by Writ of Summons .
His grandson, the 3rd Baron, was made Earl of Pembroke in 1339 . His grandson, the 3rd Earl, inherited the title of Baron Manny from his mother in 1384 . When he died on December 31, 1389, the earl title and the barony of Manny became extinct. A dispute broke out among his relatives about the inheritance of the Barony of Hastings, which for a long time none of them could effectively decide for themselves. The title Baron Hastings was therefore suspended. It was not until 452 years later, in 1841, that the House of Lords awarded the title of ancestral line of Jacob Astley . Retrospectively, his male ancestors were declared de iure Barons Hastings until 1542 ; since 1542 the title was therefore abeyant and was confirmed and restored in 1841 for Jacob Astley as the 16th Baron Hastings.
Today's title holder has been his descendant Delaval Astley as the 23rd Baron since 2007 .
Second award (1299)
On December 29, 1299, the title was created a second time parallel to the above, when Edmund Hastings was appointed to the royal parliament by Writ of Summons. This title expired as early as 1314 when the 1st Baron died childless.
Third award (1461)
While the title was dormant for the first time, the title was recreated for William Hastings on July 26, 1461 , when he was appointed to the House of Lords by Writ of Summons .
His grandson, the 3rd Baron, inherited the titles 6th Baron Botreaux , 5th Baron Hungerford and 5th Baron de Moleyns from his mother in 1520 ; he was also raised to Earl of Huntingdon in 1513 . When the 10th Earl died on October 2, 1789, the dignity of the earl fell to his distant relative Theophilus Hastings , and the four baronies fell to his sister, who was married to John Rawdon, 1st Earl of Moira . Their son Francis Rawdon-Hastings was raised to Baron Rawdon in 1783 , inherited his father as 2nd Earl of Moira in 1793 and his mother as 14th Baron Hastings, 17th Baron of Botreaux, 16th Baron Hungerford and 16th Baron de Moleyns and in 1808 was promoted to Marquess of Hastings in 1816 . His son, the 2nd Marquess, inherited the title 7th Earl of Loudoun from his mother in 1840 . His younger son, the 4th Marquess, inherited the title of 21st Baron Gray de Ruthyn from his mother in 1858 . When he died on November 10, 1868, the Marquessate went out, the Earldom Loudoun fell to his eldest sister Edith Rawdon-Hastings and the five baronies fell in Abeyance between his four sisters. In 1871 the abeyance of the four baronies Hastings, Botreaux, Hungerford and de Moleyns was ended in favor of the aforementioned Edith Rawdon-Hastings, 10th Countess of Loudoun. Their son, the 11th Earl, inherited the title of 2nd Baron Donington from his father in 1895 . On his death on May 17, 1920, the Barony of Donington fell to his brother, the Earldom of Loudon to his niece Edith Abney-Hastings and the other baronies fell in Abeyance between his nieces. The abeyance of the baronies Hastings and Botreaux was ended in 1921 in favor of the aforementioned Edith Abney-Hastings, 12th Countess Loudon. In 1921, the title of Baron Stanley , which had been abeyant since 1594, was restored to her as the 7th Baroness. On her death on February 24, 1960, the Earldom of Loudon fell to her eldest daughter, Barbara Abney-Hastings , and her baronies again fell in Abeyance.
The state of Abeyance continues to this day. Today's co-heirs to the baronies of Hastings and Botreaux are: Simon Abney-Hastings, 15th Earl of Loudoun (* 1974), Sheena Williams (* 1941), Flora Purdie (* 1957) and Norman Angus MacLaren (* 1948).
