Baron Hungerford
Baron Hungerford is a hereditary British title of nobility created twice in the Peerage of England .
Awards
The title was first awarded to Walter Hungerford on January 7, 1426 , when he was appointed to the royal parliament by Writ of Summons . His son, who later became the 2nd Baron Hungerford, was raised to Baron de Moleyns on January 13, 1445 by Writ of Summons . Both titles have been united since he inherited his father in 1449. The 5th Baron Hungerford was made Earl of Huntingdon in 1529 . When the 10th Earl died in 1789, the earl title fell to a different line of the family, as, unlike the baronies, it is hereditary only in the male line. The 16th Baron Hungerford was promoted to Marquess of Hastings in 1816 . When the 4th Marquess died in 1868, the marquessate was extinguished and the baronies fell into Abeyance . This was ended in 1871 in favor of Edith Rawdon-Hastings, 10th Countess of Loudoun as 20th Baroness Hungerford and 19th Baron de Moleyns. On the death of her son, the 11th Earl in 1920, the baronies again fell into Abeyance, which, like the title Baron Strange of Knockin, was ended in 1921 in favor of Elizabeth Philipps , wife of the 1st Viscount St. Davids . When his parents died, their son united the three baronies as a subordinate title of the Viscountcy St. Davids.
On June 8, 1526, another Walter Hungerford , lord of Heytesbury in Wiltshire , was also appointed to the royal parliament by Writ of Summons, thereby establishing another Hungerford barony. To distinguish it from the above, the title is also called Baron Hungerford of Heytesbury . The title was revoked in 1540 and has not been restored since then.
