Viscount St. Davids

Viscount Saint Davids , of Lydstep Haven in the County of Pembroke , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The family's ancestral home was for a long time Picton Castle near Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire , Wales .

Award

The title was bestowed on John Wynford Philipps in 1918 . He had been a member of the House of Commons for twenty years .

Subordinate title

The first Viscount had been given the subordinate title Baron St. Davids , of Roch Castle in the County of Pembroke, in 1908. In 1912 he had also inherited the title of Baronet , of Picton Castle in the County of Pembroke, which was created in 1612 in the Baronetage of England for his ancestor John Philipps .

The first Viscount married Elizabeth Frances Abney-Hastings in 1916 . At their request, the then dormant baronies Hungerford (created 1426), Strange (created 1299) and de Moleyns (created 1445) were awarded to them in 1921 , all of which can also be transferred in the female line if the title holder has no sons. Since the Viscountess's death in 1974, the titles, all of which belong to the Peerage of England , have been listed as subordinate titles to the Viscountess.

Other titles

The 7th Baronet, who had also been a member of the House of Commons for many years, had been promoted to Baron Milford in the Peerage of Ireland in 1776 . This title expired when he died in 1823 without leaving a son.
