Baron Milford is a hereditary British title of nobility that has so far been awarded a total of three times, once in the Peerage of Ireland and twice in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Awards

The title was first bestowed on July 22, 1776 for the Member of the British House of Commons Sir Richard Philipps, 7th Baronet . The award was made in the Peerage of Ireland so that he could keep his House of Commons and not lose in favor of a seat in the House of Lords . In 1764 he had inherited the title of Baronet , of Picton Castle in the County of Pembroke, which had been bestowed on November 9, 1621, to his ancestor, the House of Commons John Philipps († 1629), in the Baronetage of England. The barony expired when Philipps died on November 28, 1823 without a male descendant, the baronetcy fell to his distant relative Rowland Philipps-Laugharne-Philipps (1788-1832) as the 8th baronet.

The second bestowal as Baron Milford , of Picton Castle in the County of Pembroke , took place on September 21, 1847 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Sir Richard Philipps (née Grant), 1st Baronet . In the female line he was a great-nephew of the baron's first bestowal, had inherited his family seat, Picton Castle, and in 1824 adopted his family name and coat of arms. On February 13, 1828 he had been raised in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom to Baronet , of Picton Castle in the County of Pembroke. Both titles expired when the 1st Baron died childless on January 3, 1857.

On February 2, 1939, the third award took place, again in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, now as Baron Milford , of Llanstephan in the County of Radnor , to Sir Laurence Philipps, 1st Baronet . This was a younger son of the Reverend Sir James Philipps, 12th Baronet (1824-1912), who had meanwhile inherited the above-mentioned Baronetcy of 1621. His older brother and heir to this baronetcy had been promoted to Viscount St. Davids in 1918 . He himself had previously held high offices in the Welsh university system and was raised on September 22, 1919 in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom to Baronet , of Llanstephan in the County of Radnor. His two titles are now held by his great-grandson Guy Philipps, 4th Baron Milford .
