Baron Jeffreys is a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once each in the Peerage of England and the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Awards

It was first awarded on May 16, 1685 by Letters Patent in the Peerage of England with the title Baron Jeffreys , of Wem in the County of Shrops , to Sir George Jeffreys, 1st Baronet , a favorite of King James II. He was already In 1681 he was raised to Baronet , of Bulstrode in the County of Buckingham , and was Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales and later Lord Chancellor . The barony was conferred with the special addition that the title should primarily be passed on to male descendants from his second marriage. Since she remained childless, however, in 1689 his son from his first marriage inherited him as the 2nd baron. Both titles finally expired on May 9, 1702, when he died without male descendants.

In the second award on July 12, 1952, the title Baron Jeffreys , of Burkham in the County of Southampton , was newly created for George Darell Jeffreys , now in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He was a great-great-great-great-grandson of the younger brother of the 1st Baron's first award. Jeffreys had made many awards from the beginning of the century until just before the start of World War II , most recently as a general , served in the British Army and then a member of the House of Commons for a decade.
