George Jeffreys, 1st Baron Jeffreys
George Jeffreys, 1st Baron Jeffreys PC (born May 15, 1645 in Wrexham in Wales , † April 18, 1689 in London ) was Lord Chancellor and Lord Chief Justice in England and Wales.
Life
Jeffreys was born on the family estate of Acton Hall, Wrexham, the sixth son of John and Margaret Jeffreys. He was educated at Shrewsbury School , St Paul's School and Westminster School , London. He then studied for a year at Cambridge University .
During the Restoration , he was Lord Chief Justice for massacres among the population after the unsuccessful attempt to take power by James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth , responsible. These deeds went down in the annals under the name of Bloody Assizes . Contrary to the widely known eighty dead, around 1,000 arbitrarily killed civilians went through his crackdown. His subsequent career showed how willingly he should submit his impartiality as a judge to his political ambitions.
James II knighted him in 1677 , in 1681 appointed him Baronet , of Bulstrode in the County of Buckingham, and four years later Baron Jeffreys , of Wem in the County of Shrewsbury, and at the same time Lord Chancellor, for his faithful and compliant service . Jeffreys held this position until Jacob was deposed in 1688. In view of his actions, he tried to flee the country but was arrested and died of kidney failure in the Tower of London . He had suffered from kidney stones for a long time .
