Charles Abbott, 1st Baron Tenterden

Charles Abbott, 1st Baron Tenterden PC SL (born October 7, 1762 in Canterbury , † November 4, 1832 in London ) was a British lawyer.

Life

He was the son of John Abbott and his wife Alice. In his youth he was considered a hardworking student with good manners. In 1802 he submitted the later authoritative publication Law relative to Merchant Ships and Seamen for the law of merchant shipping. In 1816 he was promoted to Knight Bachelor . From November 4, 1818 to November 4, 1832 he held the office of Lord Chief Justice . During this time he was chairman of the Arthur Thistlewood trial in 1820 . On April 30, 1827 he was raised to Baron Tenterden , of Hendon in the county of Middlesex. In the British House of Lords he belonged to the Tory faction .

He married Mary Lamotte on July 30, 1795. The couple had two sons and two daughters: John, Charles, Mary and Catherine.
