Baron Kerry

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baron Kerry is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

Awarding and other titles

The title was created for Thomas Fitzmaurice around 1223 .

In 1325 the 4th Baron murdered the son of Cormac Mór MacCarthy, Diarmaid Óg MacCarthy, in the courthouse in Tralee . For the act he was ostracized , his title revoked and his lands confiscated. After his death in October 1339, his brother John FitzMaurice, as 5th Baron Kerry, received title and lands back.

The 11th Baron was awarded the title Viscount Kilmaule and the subordinate title Baron Odorney in 1537 in the Peerage of Ireland . However, both titles expired when he died in 1541.

The 21st Baron was raised on January 17, 1723 in the Peerage of Ireland to Earl of Kerry with the subordinate title Viscount Clanmaurice . The Barony of Kelly has since been a minor title to the Earl.

Before the future 4th Earl inherited the title from his second uncle in 1818, he had inherited the title of 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne , along with subordinate titles, from his father as early as 1809 . Since 1818, the Earldom Kerry is therefore a subordinate title of the respective marquess.
