Awards

The title was first created on July 1, 1643 by Letters patent in the Peerage of England for Sir Thomas Leigh, 2nd Baronet . Already in 1626 he had inherited the subordinate title of Baronet , of Stoneleigh in the County of Warwick, from his grandfather of the same name , which was awarded to him on June 29, 1611 in the Baronage of England. With the childless death of his great-great-great-grandson, the 5th baron, on June 4, 1786, both titles expired.

On May 11, 1839, the title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom for Chandos Leigh was recreated. This was the son of the seventh degree nephew of the 5th Baron of the first bestowal, James Henry Leigh, of Adlestrop and Longborough (1765-1823), who in 1786 had inherited his lands, including the family seat of Stoneleigh Abbey . In addition to Stoneleigh Abbey, the barons also use Fern Farm in Adlestrop near Moreton-in-Marsh in Gloucestershire as a family home. Today's title holder has been his great-great-great-grandson Christopher Leigh as the 6th Baron since 2003 .
