Baron Neville de Raby (also Nevill de Raby ) is a hereditary British title of nobility awarded twice in the Peerage of England .

Awards

The title was first created for Ranulph Neville , Lord of Raby, Brancepeth, and Sheriff Hutton on June 24, 1295 by being convened to the royal parliament by the Writ of Summons . His great-grandson, the 4th Baron , was also elevated to Earl of Westmorland on September 29, 1397 .

This was followed by his grandson as 2nd Earl. His younger brother, Sir John Neville, was called to Parliament on November 20, 1459 by Writ of Summons parallel to his brother, thereby establishing a second hereditary barony Neville de Raby. This baron fought on the side of the House of Lancaster in the Wars of the Roses and was ostracized for high treason in 1461 and thus lost his title. The ban was lifted in 1473 and the title of his son as 2nd baron (second bestowal) was restored. In 1484 he inherited the titles of 3rd Earl of Westmorland and 6th Baron Neville de Raby (first conferment) from his uncle. The three titles remained united from now on.

His descendant, the 6th Earl, took part in an unsuccessful Catholic uprising against Queen Elizabeth I ( Rising of the North ) in 1569/70 and was therefore ostracized in 1571 for high treason. All of his titles were revoked and his lands were confiscated.
