Baron O'Neill , of Shane's Castle in the County of Antrim, is a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once in the Peerage of Ireland and once in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The territorial dedication of the title refers to the barons' family seat, Shane's Castle in County Antrim .

Awards

The first time the title was bestowed on October 25, 1793, the MP in the Irish House of Commons, John O'Neill . On October 3, 1795, this was also raised to Viscount O'Neill . His son, the 2nd Viscount, was also awarded the titles Earl O'Neill and Viscount Raymond in August 1800 . All four titles belonged to Peerage of Ireland. When the Earl died childless on March 25, 1841, the latter two titles were extinguished, while the Barony and Viscounty O'Neill fell to his brother as the 3rd Viscount. When he too died childless on February 12, 1855, both titles expired.

The fortune of the late 3rd Viscount fell to his third-degree grand-nephew, the cleric and composer Reverend William Chichester , who immediately took the family name O'Neill in 1855. For this the title was recreated on August 3, 1866 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. Today's title holder has been his great-grandson Raymond O'Neill as 4th Baron since 1944 .
