Martin O'Neill, Baron O'Neill of Clackmannan

Martin John O'Neill, Baron O'Neill of Clackmannan (born January 6, 1945 ) is a British Labor Party politician who was a member of the House of Commons for 26 years and has been a life peer member of the House of Lords since 2005 .

Life

After attending school, O'Neill first worked for an insurance company, later an assistant auditor in the Scottish Estate Duty Office , before becoming a teacher at a secondary school and a tutor at The Open University .

During this time he ran in the general election on October 10, 1974 for the Labor Party in the constituency of Edinburgh North for the first time for a mandate in the House of Commons, but suffered a defeat and thus missed entry into the House of Commons. In the general election on May 3, 1979 , he was elected for the first time as a member of the House of Commons, where he first represented the constituency of Stirlingshire East and Clackmannan , then since the general election on June 9, 1983, the Clackmannan constituency and most recently since the election on May 1, 1997 the constituency of Ochil . In the general election on May 5, 2005 , he finally decided not to run again and left the House of Commons after more than 26 years.

During his long term service he was a member of the Committee for Scotland from 1979 to 1980 and then spokesman for the opposition Labor Group for Scotland until 1984 and then between 1984 and 1988 spokesman for the opposition for defense, disarmament and arms control. He then served as the main opposition spokesman on defense from 1988 to 1992 and as the opposition spokesman for energy between 1992 and 1995. In these functions he was a member of his party's shadow cabinet .

Then O'Neill was from 1995 until the end of his parliamentary membership in 2005 chairman of the House Committee on Commerce and Industry.

After retiring from the House of Commons, O'Neill was raised to the nobility by a letters patent dated June 14, 2005 as a life peer with the title Baron O'Neill of Clackmannan , of Clackmannan in Clackmannanshire . Shortly after its introduction was carried out ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . He is also the chairman of the Association of the Nuclear Industry.
