Baron Percy is a hereditary British title of nobility awarded twice in the Peerage of England and once in the Peerage of Great Britain .

Awards

The title was first created on February 5, 1299 for Sir Henry de Percy of Alnwick from the Percy family by being appointed to the House of Lords by Writ of Summons . The 4th Baron was raised to Earl of Northumberland in 1377 . He rebelled against the king and in 1405 was stripped of his title. They were restored for his grandson in 1416. His son, the 3rd Earl, was on the side of Lancaster in the War of the Roses , which is why his title was stripped from him in 1461. They were restored for his son in 1470. When his grandson, the 6th Earl, died childless in 1537, his heir and brother Sir Thomas Percy had just been executed for high treason. His inheritance claim to the title and that of his heirs was forfeited, so that the two titles expired.

For Sir Thomas Percy's son, Thomas Percy , the title Baron Percy was newly created on April 30, 1557 in the second bestowal . The title was not awarded to him by Writ of Summons, but by Letters patent . The barony was hereditary exclusively in the male line of descendants. Two days later, on May 1, 1557, the title Earl of Northumberland was newly created for him. The re-creation of the Earldom is sometimes seen as the restoration of the Earl title, which was lost in 1537, and Thomas Percy is therefore often counted as the 7th Earl. All of his titles finally expired in 1670 with the death of his descendant Joceline Percy , the 11th Earl.

In the third award, the title was created on November 23, 1722 for Algernon Seymour, 7th Duke of Somerset , when he was appointed to the House of Lords by Writ of Summons. The barony was bestowed on the basis of procedural errors , based on the erroneous assumption that the second barony was also hereditary in the female line and was thus last held by his mother Elizabeth Percy . Instead, the Writ of Summons noted the new award of the title, making it the last Barony by Writ award in British history and the only one in the Peerage of Great Britain . The title was accordingly hereditary in the female line. Today's title holder has been Ralph Percy, 12th Duke of Northumberland as 11th Baron Percy , since 1995 .
