Baron Russell of Thornhaugh is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .

Award

The title was created on July 21, 1603 for the English military man Sir William Russel . This was a younger son of Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford .

His son, the 2nd Baron, inherited the title of 4th Earl of Bedford from an uncle in 1627 . His son, the 5th Earl and 3rd Baron, was also elevated to Duke of Bedford in 1694 . The barony has since been a subordinate title of the respective duke.
