David Russell Russel-Johnston, Baron Russell-Johnston , PC (born David Russell Johnston ; born July 28, 1932 in Edinburgh , † July 27, 2008 in Paris , France ) was a Scottish politician ( Liberal Democrat ).

life and work

He was a Member of the House of Commons for Inverness from 1964 to 1983 and for Inverness, Nairn and Lochaber from 1983 to 1997. From 1970 to 1974 he was chairman of the Liberal Party of Scotland and "Leader" from 1974 to 1988. From 1988 to 1992 he was "Deputy Leader" for the Liberal Democrats. From 1999 to 2002 he was President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe . In 1997 he was raised as Baron Russell-Johnston , of Minginish in Highland, to life peer and was henceforth a member of the House of Lords ; at the same time he changed his last name from Johnston to Russell-Johnston .

Johnston married Joan Graham Menzies in 1967. You have three sons.
