For the first time on July 21, 1628, the title Baron Savile , of Pontefract (also of Pomfret ), was created in the Peerage of England for the House of Commons John Savile . His son, Thomas Savile , who inherited him in 1630, had already been raised to Viscount Savile and Baron Castlebar in the Peerage of Ireland on June 11, 1628 and was raised to Earl of Sussex on May 25, 1644 in the Peerage of England . All four titles expired on the death of his only son, the 2nd Earl, on October 11, 1671.
In the second bestowal, the title Baron Savile , of Rufford in the County of Nottingham , was created on July 7, 1887 for the diplomat John Savile . He was the eldest illegitimate son of John Lumley-Savile, 8th Earl of Scarbrough . Since he was unmarried and childless, the title was bestowed with the special addition that, in the absence of his own male descendants, he could also be inherited by his nephew John Savile-Lumley, the only son of his brother Rev. Frederick Savile-Lumley, and his male descendants . He inherited him accordingly when he died in 1896. Today's title holder has been his grandson John Lumley-Savile as 4th Baron since 2008 . The family seat of the current barons is Gryce Hall in Shelley near Huddersfield in West Yorkshire .
