The 185 meter high Barra Grande Dam [ ˌbaːχɐ ˈɡɾãd͡ʒi ] is a dam built in 2006 with a hydroelectric power station in Brazil. It stands on the Rio Pelotas on the border between the Brazilian states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul . The next places are Anita Garibaldi (SC) and Pinhal da Serra (RS).
The operating license was granted in July 2005 and the reservoir was filled for the first time in 2005. 561 families had to be relocated and 959 families had to be compensated for the 94 km² reservoir .
The dam has a large flood relief with six openings.
The first of three turbines in the hydropower plant went into operation in November 2005, the second in February 2006 and the last in May 2006. Each has a nominal output of 236 MW, a total of 708 MW. The total electrical output is 690 MW. The US aluminum group Alcoa also belongs to the Barra Grande Energetica S / A (BAESA) operating consortium .
The barrier structure is a CFR dam , a rock embankment dam with a concrete seal on the water side. At 185 meters, it is the third highest dam in Brazil and, at the opening of one of the largest CFR dams in the world.
