The Rio Pelotas is a river in southern Brazil and a source river of the Río Uruguay .

The river has its source at Alto do Bispo in São Joaquim National Park in the Serra Geral , where it meets the Serra do Mar , and flows 437 km northwest before merging with the Rio Canoas to form the Rio Uruguay. The pelotas forms the border between the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina over a long distance .

In 2004, construction work began on the Barra Grande project on Pelotas , a large dam with a hydroelectric power station . The dam project has sparked major protests from local residents and international environmental groups.
