The Machadinho hydropower plant is a dam with a hydropower plant on the Rio Pelotas near Machadinho , on the border between Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil . The power plant has a nominal output of 1140 MW and produces 37% of the energy required in Santa Catarina. It is supplied from a reservoir that is dammed up by a CFR dam . Machadinho Energetica is the owner and operator .

background

A series of studies on the Machadinho Dam was carried out between 1966 and 1981 and a design was approved in 1982. The power plant was supposed to be operational by 1993, but the project was delayed due to environmental concerns. The planners revised the project and moved the location further upstream. After another series of studies and new plans, the project was approved in 1995. Construction began on March 2, 1998 and on October 26, 1999 the river diversion was complete. On August 28, 2001, the dam was almost complete and began to dam the Pelotas River. The first generator started running on February 16, 2002. The construction was officially completed on August 31, 2002.

The dam

The Machadinho Dam is a 700 m long and 126 m high CFR dam with a crest height of 480 m above sea level. The dammed reservoir has a capacity of 3300 million m³, a surface of 79 km² and a catchment area of 32,500 km². The dam has a flood relief with eight outlets that are 21.8 m wide and 18 m high and are designed for a discharge of 35,703 m³ / s.

The power plant

The above-ground power plant is 130.2 m long, 37.5 m wide and contains three 136-tonne 380 MW generators (together 1140 MW), which are driven by Francis turbines . The first generator was put into operation on February 16, 2002, the second on April 30 and the last on December 7 of the same year.

The Barra Grande hydropower plant and the Itá hydropower plant are comparable hydropower plants nearby.
