The pumped storage power plant Kruonis ( English Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant , KPSP) near Kruonis (in the Rajongemeinde Kaišiadorys ) in Lithuania was built from 1974 to 1992. Its main purpose is to provide energy storage and reserve for the power grid in order to regulate the load curve with different levels of consumption during the day. The pumped storage power plant works in conjunction with the Kaunas hydropower plant . During times of the day with excess power, this is mostly at night, the power plant is operated in pump mode and pumps water with excess electrical energy from the lower Kaunasser reservoir into the upper basin. During high energy demand, typically on weekdays in the morning and evening peak, the pumped storage power plant lets water run from the upper basin into the lower one, whereby the electrical energy is recovered. With the upper basin fully filled, the power plant can generate 900 MW for approximately twelve hours. In the past , the generators at the Kruonis pumped storage power plant were automatically put into operation in order to be able to quickly compensate for the power deficit in the power grid in the event of a failure at the Ignalina nuclear power plant . The nuclear power plant was decommissioned at the end of 2009.

The electrical line from this power plant is carried over a 330 kV line from Elektrėnai , where the Elektrėnai power plant, the largest fossil fuel power plant in Lithuania, is located, to Kaunas .

Technical specifications

The Kruonis pumped storage power plant currently has an installed capacity of 900 MW in four units of 225 MW each. The planned output of the pumped storage power plant after expansion is 1,600 MW in eight units of 200 MW each.

Pump turbines

The pumped storage power plant has radial-axis pump turbines with a diameter of 6.3 m, which are operated at 150 revolutions per minute and a nominal pressure of 100 m. In turbine operation, the pump turbines each produce 205 MW with a flow rate of 226 m³ / s, in pump operation they produce 217 MW with a flow rate of 189 m³ / s.

Generators

The vertical axis synchronous generators each have an output of 236 MW with a generator voltage of 15.75 kV. The mass of the generators is 1120 t.

Reverse channel

The reversal channel is 10 m deep, 250 m wide at the water surface and 189 m wide at the bottom.

Pipelines

The pipelines are 840 m long, have an inside diameter of 7.5 m and an outside diameter of 8.4 m.

Upper basin

View from the lower basin of the power plant and the dam of the upper basin

The upper basin is between 140 m and 153.5 m above sea level, the bottom is 138 m above sea level. It has a total volume of 48,000,000 m³, of which 41,000,000 m³ can be used by the pumped storage power plant. The basin has an area of 3.06 km². The circumference of the basin is 6.8 km, 6.3 km of which is realized by a dam. The intake structure is 127 m long and 70 m wide.

Photovoltaic power plant

A floating photovoltaic power plant will be built in the storage basin of the pumped storage power plant by 2021. Initially, the state-owned company Lietuvos Energijos Gamyba is to build a 60 kW pilot plant in collaboration with scientists from the Technical University of Kaunas . In the final stage, the plant is expected to have a capacity of 200 to 250 MW and triple the currently installed solar power capacity in Lithuania.
