The Kaunasser Sea (Lithuanian: Kauno marios ) is a reservoir that was created in Soviet times by the damming of the Memel above Kaunas . The reservoir has existed since 1959. The backwater is over 80 km long, the length of the actual reservoir, where the entire river valley is flooded, is 25 km. At normal water level it has an area of 63 km². The greatest width is over 3 km, the greatest depth 22 m.
At least 45 villages were affected by the flooding and their residents were relocated. Some buildings, such as the wooden church of Rumšiškės were saved and elsewhere rebuilt.
The Pažaislis Monastery and the Rumšiškės Ethnographic Open-Air Museum are located on the shore of the Kaunas Sea . The sea is used for sailing, and there is a marina in the immediate vicinity of Kaunas.
The reservoir serves as the lower basin for the Kruonis pumped storage power plant .
