The Lithuanian Open Air Museum ( Lithuanian Lietuvos liaudies buities muziejus) is located 24 km east of the former Lithuanian capital Kaunas . It was founded in 1966 and opened in 1974. With an area of 195 ha and 183 structures transferred and 86,000 exhibits, it is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe.

The museum is located directly on the banks of the Kaunasser Sea , a 25 km long reservoir of the Memel . It can be reached via the Kaunas- Vilnius motorway , a train stop 6 km from the museum and by passenger boat on the Kaunas Sea via its own jetty.
Exhibits and events
A 7 km long circular path leads through the hilly museum grounds. At this there are assemblies with villages, individual farms and technical buildings such as a grain mill , an oil mill , a fulling mill and a forge . The most important regions of Lithuania, namely Upper Lithuania , Žemaitija , Dzūkija and Suvalkija, are represented by assemblies. The exhibits date from the end of the 18th century to the first half of the 19th century. The center of the museum is a town with characteristic buildings and workshops such as B. a pottery , a weaving mill and a jewelry workshop , in which jewelry is made from amber and wood .
A section on the subject of exile and resistance commemorates the painful times of the German and Soviet occupation of Lithuania.
The museum organizes several special exhibitions and folklore festivals with dance and music every museum season. The international music festival Granatos Live takes place in the museum grounds at the beginning of August .
